   A native of Marysville in Union County, Ohio.

John Von Der Au is Brother Johnson’s Great-Grandfather. Cpl Von Der Au served the Union from 1861-1865. Advanced through Kentucky and Tennessee with Shermans Army. John Von Der Au was wounded at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain GA, hospitalized and returned to service at Atlanta, GA. With the Army he Marched to the Sea and Savanna, then turned north in the Carolina campaigns to Bentonville, NC in 1865.

Brother Johnson joined the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and Major General Thomas H. Ruger Camp #1 by application at the Ruger Camp booth during the150th Anniversary of the Battle of Fort Fisher during the Fort Fisher anniversary celebration in 2015.

Since joining SUVCW Ruger Camp #1,  Brother Johnson has served at the following positions:
  • A Delegate to Department of NC and National Encampments
  • Participated with the Brothers of Maj. Gen. Thomas H. Ruger Camp #1 staffing the information tent during ceremonies at Fort Fisher Historical Site and Bentonville Battle Field Historical Site.
  • Appointed Ruger Camp Signals Officer 2015 - 2018
    • Designed and implemented Ruger Camp #1 Website and Facebook page.
      •  Administrator; Camp Website and Facebook page
  • Appointed Department of North Carolina Signals Officer 2017 - 2018
    • Designed and implemented the first Department of North Carolina Website in 2017
      • Administrator of the Department of North Carolina Website
  • Elected Junior Vice-Commander of Major General Thomas H. Ruger Camp #1  2016
  • Elected Senior Vice-Commander of Maj. Gen. Thomas H. Ruger Camp #1 2017 & 2018
